Reminiscent of his previous film Your Name, Weathering With You is Shinkai’s latest feature-length film–and one of his best. The visuals and soundtrack are stunning, as expected. The film is relatively light on story. While there’s certainly a plot, it’s not the film’s selling point; rather, the characters and the setting, and the way that they seamlessly weave a fantastical sense of wonder into the real world, take center stage here.

Topping Your Name was never going to be an easy feat for Shinkai. The 2016 film was met with worldwide success both commercially and critically. However, Weathering With You is as close as anyone could have gotten. Since its initial release, there have been numerous debates on which film is superior, as should be expected–the movie is a spiritual successor to Your Name, and they share a huge amount of similarities. That said: this film is best enjoyed by avoiding all comparisons to its predecessor. If you want to really enjoy Weathering With You for what it is, drop the mental comparisons between the two films and allow yourself to experience this piece of art it as its own entity.

If you’ve never seen a Shinkai film before and have no idea what I just said–even better. Forget all about it and watch this movie immediately. You won’t regret it.
